The LGA1151 socket has been designed to fully support Intel’s 9000- series Coffee Lake CPUs which were announced at the beginning of 2018. For example, if your current 8th gen processor is an Intel Core i7-8700K then you simply CAN’T use a Z390 motherboard because that model isn’t supported by any already out there! ASUS designed their ROG Maximus XI Code with the intent to allow anyone who purchases it to set up a gaming environment from scratch. They’ve decided against making this product an entry-level, introductory model and instead made it for those who know what they’re looking for and want a motherboard that can do a little bit of everything. The board has eight power phases on the CPU area, which makes overclocking easier. It also includes 5X Protection II – ASUS studied all aspects of components going bad and included protections for overvoltage condition, under-voltage event, short circuit protection all so you don’t have to worry about destroying your system no matter how much time you spend playing games on it.
That being said, this model isn’t perfect. The CPU VRM heatsink is a little flimsy and the M.2 connectors are placed right under it, so you’re effectively blocking them with your graphics card. ASUS included an 8-pin power connector for those who want to apply additional overclocking, but we wish they could’ve used a more reliable design instead of pushing towards proprietary solutions and propriety features (Rule #1: Don’t Screw Up Your Own Screws). There’s no doubt that the ROG Maximus XI Code is built for those who know what they’re looking for in terms of performance. However, if you’re not too keen on overclocking yourself or maybe don’t even know what overclocking is, you probably won’t get the most out of this motherboard.
In case you do want to give it a go, ASUS included their own version of Auto Overclocking XOC that will help you get started. While this model may be a little difficult to understand and configure for beginners, we have to hand it to ASUS for making a product that’s meant for gamers who know what they’re looking for when they spend way more money on a motherboard than they should. ROG Maximus XI Code is one of the most expensive motherboards on the market (price varies between $500 and $520). However, ASUS built their product with high-quality components to go along with its features, so it’s definitely worth your money if you’re looking for something that has every bell and whistle possible. ASUS made this motherboard to be exactly what they advertised – a gaming motherboard – which shows how much work went into choosing each individual component.
